Medicare vs. Medicaid

Just a quick note for future reference in case I forget later.

Medicare is a federally-governed program that addresses the high medical costs that older citizens face. It is an entitlement program; if you paid for it through Social Security taxes, then you are automatically entitled to it when you turn 65.

Medicaid is a state-governed program (called Medi-Cal in California) for low-income, financially needy individuals. Eligibility for this program is tied to individual need; you must meet strict eligibility criteria to qualify for Medicaid.
